DVM Extern
Students: this is your chance to roll up your sleeves and experience ER medicine the VEG way! DVM externs are immersed in emergency medicine and VEG culture through one-on-one mentorship from our skilled emergency doctors in our open-concept hospitals. They observe and learn how to communicate effectively with customers, diagnose a variety of emergency conditions, develop emergency treatment plans, and more— all while keeping people and their pets together when they need it most!
Who’s Eligible: Veterinary students incoming or in their 3rd and 4th year at AVMA-accredited universities
Modality: In person
Location: Once accepted, you’ll get to select your preferred location from a list of VEG hospitals around the country
Program Length: If not for school credit: up to 2 weeks; For school credit: 2 weeks; flexible based on school requirements
Phase 1: Written application
The written application evaluates baseline knowledge about VEG and gauges long term career goals. Once submitted, it is reviewed by VEG talent managers to ensure candidates meet all program requirements.
Phase 2: Virtual interview
Candidates will submit answers to 1-2 pre-recorded questions. From there, they will hear back from a talent manager on any next steps.
Phase 3: Scheduling and confirmation
If accepted, candidates will receive a scheduling document with hospital availability for the cycle. Candidates submit a ranking of preferred dates and locations, which will be confirmed on a first come, first serve basis.

Veterinary Technician / Nurse Student Extern
As Veterinary Nurse externs, Vet Technician and veterinary nursing students get hands-on experience in the ER, learning everything from triaging emergency cases to running diagnostic tests. With one-on-one support from a Veterinary Nurse, you’ll see what it really takes to be an ER Vet Nurse!
Who’s Eligible: Veterinary Technician/nursing students enrolled in an AVMA CVTEA accredited program and in need of clinical skills and/or hours
Modality: In person
Location: Selected VEG hospitals around the country
Program Length: Flexible based on your school requirements
Phase 1: Application and interview process
The application is reviewed to ensure candidates meet all program requirements.
Phase 2: Application review
The application is reviewed to ensure candidates meet all program requirements. If accepted, you will meet with a hospital leader to discuss the externship.
Phase 3: Externship completion
Students are paired with VEG Nurses and immersed into ER medicine—the VEG way! The externship allows them to work side-by-side with VEGgies and experience an open concept ER hospital.
Phase 4: Feedback
Feedback is collected externally from students to identify program strengths and improvement areas, as well as internally from VEGgies on each student’s performance.
