Erica Conn felt a connection to VEG from the moment she began here as a campus ambassador. After college graduation, she became a scribe at VEG Chandler and truly seized the opportunity to learn what it’s like to work in ER. Not only does she work side-by-side with doctors to create complete medical records, she’s grown in her role to become a scribe trainer. Recently accepted to the NERD program, Erica’s journey to becoming a VEG vet continues! Here’s how her work as a scribe has helped her so far.
How did you learn about the Scribe program?
I was introduced to VEG during my first year as a veterinary student at the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine. They were launching their largest campus ambassador program to date. I fell in love with VEG’s concept and felt drawn to their values—they aligned with my own. I knew from my first webinar with VEG that I had to be a part of it. From there I became a campus ambassador. Upon graduation I had the opportunity to begin working as a scribe until I successfully completed my NAVLE.
Why did you participate? What were you hoping to get out of the program?
I participated in the scribe program because I could not see myself anywhere else but VEG. The Scribe position was perfect for me at the time—I wish I had this opportunity as an undergraduate! You get to work side by side with doctors, learning and participating in the ER. You are much more than a silent partner to the doctors and veterinary nurses; you are valued in the hospital.
Once when I walked through the doors, I smiled when one of the doctors said, “Erica, my future self is so happy you are here!” She was referring to when her shift was over and she’d have to complete medical records, because when a scribe is in the building you know many will be done, or started at the very least.

What kind of support did you receive from your team/manager to further your learning?
I have been nothing but encouraged and supported by my hospital managers and medical director. The entire team is so supportive and welcoming. After our previous scribe trainer was accepted to vet school, my management team challenged me to take on the role and create what it is today in our location. We have more scribes than ever before. Our team is strong and I am so proud of them. I cannot wait to see how it grows in the future.
What was your favorite aspect of the program?
Working alongside our doctors. I have learned so much from them. I truly value them and their mentorship.
Share something unexpected about your experience.
I was excited to complete my RECOVER CPR training, which I wasn’t able to do in veterinary school. And, when codes are being run, as a scribe I get to record the information for the team. This is not only helpful to the team, but also to me personally, as I’m learning how to do lifesaving procedures. When the time comes for me to step into a more hands-on role, I’ll feel confident in my ability to step up and help people and their pets when they need it most.
How has this program helped you to grow in your career at VEG?
I have been able to build relationships with my hospital team and members in VQ (our headquarters). I have their confidence that I will do well as a future VEG doctor. VEG offers the training and dedication to their VEGgies to increase their skills and help them grow.
Is there something you are doing now that you weren’t able to do before completing this program?
I feel proficient in entering records and discharges for patients. This will be a huge help as I enter my next step as a doctor.
