We’re looking for more than high GPAs—we’re looking for future ER leaders. People who:

• Live and breathe emergency medicine, with a passion for practicing it the VEG way

• Have grit—resilient, driven, and shaped by the obstacles they’ve overcome

• Think like visionaries and lead with heart—ready to challenge the norm, push the VEGolution forward, and make ER better for people and pets

• DVM students entering their final year at an AVMA-accredited veterinary school (those eligible for 2027 NERD Cohorts)

• Interest in pursuing emergency medicine at VEG after graduation

• Minimum GPA of 3.0 and/or in top 50% of their class. Students who do not have access to class rank or GPA may still apply but additional information will be required upon application.

• VEG Externship strongly preferred

Applications open in February for rising final years (those graduating between September 2026-June 2027).

The process includes:

1. A written application

2. An interview (if advanced to next stage)

3. Finalists may be invited to a virtual conversation with a VEG leader

From scholarship recipient to full-time ER doctor, this program is just the beginning of your VEG journey. Past winners have gone on to complete the NERD Program, lead emergency shifts, and become mentors to new generations of VEGgies.
